We are committed to protecting the culture and customs of the people and places where we work. Respecting and being sensitive to the needs of all groups within our diverse society is integral to the way we work.

Our people understand the significance of cultural heritage and seek opportunities to make meaningful contributions and foster respectful relationships.

On our projects we work collaboratively with local community groups to protect heritage items, artefacts and any items of cultural significance discovered during our operations. When constructing Westpac Place, a 32 storey office tower in Sydney, our team was involved in extensive archaeological discoveries, and ensured that cultural heritage items were protected during excavation.

In 2006 Leighton Contractors purchased a 50% interest in the indigenous contracting company, Ngarda Civil and Mining. The vision of this self-managed business in Western Australia is to create wealth and alleviate poverty among indigenous people by seeking and nurturing long-term commercial development.

Working closely with the Maori community was an important part of the Northern Motorway Extension project, in New Zealand. Find out more in ‘A Project’s Blessing’.
