Pacific Motorway Package 2 Concrete Pavement
Concrete roadway of international standard
This contract required the construction of a 12km section of the 43km of the Pacific Motorway. The motorway is of international standard and incorporates eight lanes of concrete pavement. Within the contract there are four grade separated interchanges.
The construction sequencing was a major management issue requiring provision at all times for the safety of road users and the work force. Compliance with stringent environmental standards whilst providing uninterrupted access for motorists and communities along the route was important.
Concrete pavement
Construction of concrete pavements in Queensland is a relatively new undertaking which the Department of Main Roads approached with extreme caution.
Recognising the concerns of State road authorities as to the long term performance of concrete pavements constructed in other States, the Department’s primary goal was to ensure that the contract delivered a concrete pavement of uncompromised quality. Leighton Contractors placed a strong emphasis on the selection and procurement of the most appropriate mix design, constituent materials and paving equipment ensuring a quality pavement.
All work conformed to the stringent and critical performance characteristics of the pavement as specified in terms of flexural strength, density and an absence of unplanned cracking.
Project details
Consistent concrete mix to the pavers of up to 1,800m³ per day was achieved. The important pavement surface evenness criteria, measured by rideability count, is better than the specified requirements. Continuing improvement of rideability was achieved by close attention to paving detail. The paving crew developed a strong competitive desire to produce the best quality result which was recognised by the Department.
