Leighton Contractors Pty Limited, in conjunction with its Gateway WA Consortium partners Georgiou, GHD, AECOM and BG&E, will begin detailed planning for the Gateway WA Perth Airport and Freight Access Project, after signing an alliance agreement with Main Roads WA on Friday (November 9).

The project, valued at more than $1 billion, involves much-needed improvements around Perth Airport as well as the nearby Kewdale and Forrestfield industrial estates, including extra lanes on Tonkin Highway, new interchanges and the upgrade of Leach Highway to an expressway.

“This alliance contracting agreement demonstrates Main Roads’ confidence in our expertise, innovation and high quality of service offering and we are extremely proud to be involved in helping prepare the city of Perth for future growth,” said Peter Handel, General Manager Infrastructure in Western Australia.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with Main Roads after leading successful alliances on the New Perth Bunbury Highway, Mandurah Entrance Road Project and currently the Great Eastern Highway Upgrade in Belmont.”
Other road projects delivered by Leighton Contractors include the award winning Gateway Bridge Upgrade Project in Queensland, the M80 Upgrade Project in Victoria and the Ballina Bypass in NSW.

The Gateway WA Project, jointly funded by the State and Federal governments, is expected to be completed by 2017, ahead of the planned consolidation of the domestic and international terminals.

The alliance will now prepare the Direct Cost Target and detailed design for the project with major construction expected to commence early next year.
