Monash University’s newest student residences Briggs Hall and Jackomas Hall has achieved 5 Star Green Star Design – Multi Unit Residential As Built v1 rating, the first ever project to be certified under the new Green Building Council Australia (GBCA) Multi-Unit Residential tool.

Pivotal in achieving this certification, design features include a 153 kW photovoltaic array, greywater treatment, high performance facade including sustainable timber cladding, individual metering, hydronic heating (radiators), natural ventilation and large tracts of landscaping and productive gardens.

Funded under the National Residential Affordability Scheme (NRAS), the 608-bed student accommodation facility was delivered under a Design & Construct contract by BroadAPM, a Joint Venture (JV) between leading mid-tier Victorian construction contractor APM Group and national contractor Broad Construction Services.

BroadAPM General Manager, Brian Sands said the strength of the BroadAPM partnership, established two years ago was crucial in the success of the project.

“The BroadAPM JV combines 40 years expertise in the commercial construction industry in Australia and provides a competitive, mid-tier construction cost alternative, supported by tier-one expertise and security.”

Sands added that the Joint Venture entity has the capability, through people, systems and financial support, to secure projects in the larger $25 to $200 million bracket in the retail, health and aged care, education and commercial / office sectors.

Construction of Monash NRAS Student Accommodation reached Practical Completion ahead of schedule in November 2011. The project exceeded the Client’s expectations due to the “collaborative approach undertaken by BroadAPM between the consultant team and Monash University, delivering outcomes of the highest quality in design and finishes,” according to Monash University’s Project Manager Peter Cook.
