“I want to see Leighton Contractors become the industry leader in every sector in which we operate. With our strong performing team, I am confident we can make this happen. This is an exciting time for us.”
When Peter was appointed as Managing Director in 2004, Leighton Contractors was a general construction company with 2,500 employees and work-in-hand of $2.5 billion.
Under Peter’s leadership, by the end of 2006 we had trebled our turnover, doubled in size to over 5,000 employees and diversified our portfolio to include significant mining, industrial, telecommunications and investment activities. Today, work-in-hand is over $6 billion.
Peter has over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry with wide-ranging general management and project experience both in Asia and Australia. He spent 11 years overseas in various positions including Director and General Manager of Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited, with responsibility for operations in Hong Kong, mainland China and the Philippines.
“There is no shortage of work out there, but the most valuable time we can spend is with our clients understanding their immediate needs and those over the horizon.”
One of our key priorities is to share our substantial capabilities and resources across the company for the benefit of our clients. In 2006, Laurie was appointed as Deputy Managing Director, with specific accountability for the Construction and Mining Divisions.
His focus is therefore on understanding our clients’ current and future needs and marshalling our enterprise-wide resources to meet them.
Since joining us in 1972, Laurie has worked in a variety of project and contracting roles, becoming a director of the company in 1994. For ten years, he was General Manager of the Northern Region, responsible for all civil, building, industrial and mining work in the states of Queensland and the Northern Territory. He then became Executive General Manager, Construction and Mining – Northern & Western Regions in 2005, before moving to his current role.
“My current focus is the continued pursuit of business growth within our Industrial and Telecommunications Divisions.”
Our capabilities in Industrial engineering allow our core mining and construction groups to offer our clients end-to-end services. As Executive General Manager of the Industrial & Telecommunications Divisions, Phil is the driving force behind bringing together our specialist skills and resources and our financial strength to better support our clients in the minerals and metals, power, renewable energy and manufacturing sectors.
He also oversees our Telecommunications Division, which includes the Visionstream, Nextgen, LSE and Metronode businesses.
Phil has over thirty years’ experience in the construction, resources and mining industries. Since joining us in 1981, he has held roles covering all levels of management from Project Engineer through to Executive General Manager.
“Our strong financial capability gives us immense opportunities. We need to ensure we continue to deliver a solid and sustainable performance.”
In 2005 Peter was appointed GM Finance & Administration, charged with maximising the financial capability of our company.
Peter has held financial and administrative roles for over 23 years with large corporations in construction contracting, engineering, project management, commercial and residential property areas.
He has worked with the Leighton Group since 1994, including a posting in Asia where he was responsible for the Hong Kong division, with responsibility for Hong Kong, China and the Philippines. In 2003 he returned to Sydney as Executive General Manager for Leighton Holdings Limited.
“Operational support to our people will underpin exceptional performance and sustained growth.”

Josh’s career spans 32 years having joined Leighton Contractors in 1995 after 20 years with the John Holland Group as both a Director and General Manager of Civil Engineering.
“We have some of the most qualified and experienced professionals in their respective fields. We are absolutely committed to providing them with the best possible support to ensure all of our people have safe, challenging and rewarding work."
Our strong performance has been due to the capability, commitment and dedication of our people – they are the foundation of our success. Peter was appointed in 2006 to ensure we continue to attract and retain the best people in the industry by being an employer of choice.
He leads a strong network of experienced HR professionals who focus on career advancement, professional development and retention. His mandate is to make Leighton Contractors an organisation where people can have a career, not just a job.
